Our relationships are vital to our mental and emotional wellbeing. As we head towards the Christmas holiday season, many of my clients are telling me that they are struggling with their relationships.  For example, people may disagree on where to cut costs or what to prioritise. Christmas is a time that can bring joy, but for many it can also be stressful and testing our relationships. Here at IC Therapies, we help to normalise the fact that you are not alone in this current climate and work with you to help you learn helpful strategies to help you cope with the cost-of-living crisis.

There are five basic types of relationships: Friendship, Family, Romantic, Professional and Self. Our relationships are interwoven like a beautiful tapestry. Strong and healthy relationships contribute to a long, healthy, and happy life. Successful relationships can give our lives meaning and value.

Any kind of connection or association requires effective communication and care. ‘Relationship’ is a broad term and includes a variety of important aspects. Even relationships that don’t appear to align with conventional definitions can be developed to become healthier, enjoyable, and more comforting.   Whether a relationship thrives or not largely depends on the needs and approach of the people involved in the relationship.

Common problems that can occur in any relationship are:

  • Poor communication
  • Lack of trust
  • Unrealistic or unclear expectations
  • Lack of respect or support
  • Strain due to the current cost of living crisis

Some possible Solutions:

  • Start by admitting the problem in a shared way and openly communicate your feelings in a non-blaming way
  • Try to learn how to listen without judging or blaming
  • Find a good time for open communication, it can make a difference
  • Making time for real-life interactions, instead of relying too heavily on social media
  • Regular discussions about money, working out a shared financial plan, and being open to reviewing it

The holiday season, more than any time of the year, may be about spending time with your loved ones. So, what better time to prioritise and improve the health of your relationships.

Here at IC Therapies, we will work with you, using evidence-based strategies to overcome the challenges in your relationships. The therapy works by helping you to understand the patterns in your relationships, that may be contributing to mental health difficulties. Helping us to change unhealthy patterns and start leading a healthier lifestyle.
